Who doesn’t like to find a good fossil? Often referred to as the ‘pearl of Dorset,’ Lyme Regis remains one of the best and most popular destinations anywhere in the world for fossil hunting. That’s children and adults alike. The challenge is not to compete with your kids too much over who finds the best ammonite.
The town has a selection of beaches, including East Cliff, Town Beach, Church Cliff and Monmouth Beach. Monmouth beach being best for fossil hunting, whereas you’d want to head over to Church cliff for rockpooling – or even fishing when the tide is right. During the summer months Town Beach is popular amongst families as it has a sheltered stretch of sand that’s great for building sandcastles.
There are many other attractions there too. Harry May’s Mackerel and Deep Sea Fishing Trips, Lyme Regis Museum, Dinosaurland Fossil Museum, Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium and the Town Mill.
There are a few car parks in the town, which get very busy in peak season so best to arrive early.
